Buffing compound skid marks

We're buffing out a KTM finish (5 day cure) and getting "skid marks" of med compound on the finish. Speed and all seems right (900 RPM, I think)

Wet sanded at 600 grit, went to the 12" canton flannel wheel.

Should the build-up be hand buffed, removed with naptha, or what?

Wet sanding to 600 isn't anywhere near fine enough. Take it to 2000 and then if you have some micro mesh or abralon, go even higher. Then go to your medium and fine compounds.

5 days is not a very long cure, residue from sand should be removed with naptha, You don't need much pressure on the wheels. I almost never use medium compound on KTM9 but I also sand through 2400 micromesh before going to the buffer fine and extra fine compound. should be samie same.

Yeah I was stingy with the micro mesh. WIll do.

What about the buildup?

BTW, I agree with Michael...5 days is much too soon. The stuff is going to continue to shrink for a few more weeks. But if you have to...it will look decent, but not as good as it would if you wait longer.Don Williams38637.8571180556

Terry are you referring to build up of the compound? If so it's caused by too much pressure and heat. The compound will cake up in spots. Try misting the buffing wheel with some water from a spray bottle. It will soften the skid marks and they should buff off.

Hi guys. Got through the buffing. Turned out quite well. I'm sure it would be better if cured more, but Micah's deliver it out of state this Friday AM.

Gotta give this guy some praise-he's giving his pastor the first handmade guitar he built. What a surprise that'll be. The guitar turned out excellent. I KNOW it's gonna sound great. Let you know tomorrow. I postponed finishing my two by about a week so we could get his done. Then I'll post those also. Will let those cure 2 weeks before buffing

BTW Tim McNight-tried your bridge glueing method-nice clean look. The finish was only about.002-.003 or so, so it should be okay. If not we'll send it to you for warranty
